Rural research in focus
Directions and funding models for rural research are under review by government and industry bodies and it is hoped that due consideration will be given to the role of irrigation R&D as a key strategy in water reform packages.
The National Program for Sustainable Irrigation has made a submission to the Productivity Review of Rural Research and Development Corporations and is actively engaged in irrigation R&D reviews with the National Primary Industries Standing Committee on Water Use in Agriculture and the COAG Water Research and Knowledge Strategy.

Fellowship winner

In addition to the aim of building knowledge through research, the National Program for Sustainable Irrigation includes in its charter the development of human capacity and one of the avenues employed to do this is the annual Irrigation Australia Limited Travel Fellowship. This year’s winner is Alison McCarthy of Qld, whose interest is irrigation engineering. |

Evapotranspiration gets research attention
At the Irrigation Australia Conference, Vernon Carr from the Bureau of Meteorology presented a progress report on improvements being made to the collection and analysis of daily evapotranspiration data from hundreds of locations across Australia. Irrigators can find ‘recent time’ evapotranspiration records for a large number of regional locations (alongside other factors significant to irrigation scheduling like temperature, rainfall, wind and humidity) on the bureau’s website.

Collaborative research on dam evaporation losses
Presentations and posters at the Irrigation Australia Conference demonstrated the results of collaborative research through the CRC for Irrigation Futures to foster development of products and practical means of measuring and mitigating evaporation from irrigation dams.

Partner is awarded
On top of winning the Victorian Engineering Excellence Award last year, NPSI partner Goulburn-Murray Water’s FutureFlow works program of modernisation of irrigation delivery systems is the winner of an award by the International Water Association, presented in Singapore on July 9.
